The Konica AR 1.4/50 mm exists in two different variants; they probably share the same optical construction. The [7/6] 1.4/50mm is the successor of the well known [6/5] AR 1.4/57 mm lens. As similar contemporary lenses (e. g. the Minolta Rokkor PG 1.4/50mm), the first version is built like a tank. It weighs about 310 g - as much or even more than the later 1.2/50 mm lenses from Minolta or Canon! Its lens barrel is precisely engraved with distance and aperture markings.

Focusing is precise, but not as smooth as with the Minolta MC- and Leica R-lenses from the 1970s. The aperture ring is a pain to use, but that's a common problem of most Hexanon AR lenses.

The performance of the lens is very good, as with most 1.4/50 mm lenses from the late 1970s. Its unique, large front element reduces vignetting at wide apertures. Its [7/6] construction was quite large (with thick glass elements); this facilitates the construction of a well performing lens.
